Former Cameroon international Beno\u00eet Assou-Ekotto has expressed deep disappointment following the Indomitable Lions\u2019 elimination from the 2026 World Cup playoffs, describing the defeat to DR Congo as a sign of how far the team has regressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reacting hours after Chancel Mbemba\u2019s dramatic 92nd-minute winner sealed Cameroon\u2019s exit, the former Tottenham defender admitted the loss would have been unimaginable in previous years.<\/p>\n

In his words: \u201cIt\u2019s a tough wake-up\u2026 A few years ago it was unthinkable to lose against Congo. But we have to admit that we haven\u2019t improved with time. Now we focus on the AFCON. Good luck to the Congolese.\u201d<\/p>\n

A message that reflects national frustration<\/p>\n

Assou-Ekotto\u2019s comments echoed the mood across Cameroon, where fans are still struggling to digest the manner of the defeat. Under coach Marc Brys, Cameroon showed glimpses of control but lacked consistency and cutting edge. Even the introduction of captain Vincent Aboubakar at half-time could not lift the team to safety.<\/p>\n

For many, the result raises deeper questions about the team\u2019s long-term direction, player development and tactical identity \u2014 issues Assou-Ekotto subtly pointed to.<\/p>\n

DR Congo\u2019s rise under Desabre<\/p>\n

The former left-back also extended respect to DR Congo, who under S\u00e9bastien Desabre have grown into one of Africa\u2019s most organised and resilient national teams. Their performance in Yaound\u00e9 \u2014 disciplined, patient and decisive \u2014 highlighted a project that is clearly on an upward trajectory.<\/p>\n

Turning the page to AFCON<\/p>\n

For Cameroon, the focus now shifts to the Africa Cup of Nations \u2014 a tournament they last won in 2017 and where expectations will once again be high. Assou-Ekotto\u2019s message underlines the need for a reset, both mentally and structurally.<\/p>\n

His words may be blunt, but they reflect a sentiment widely shared across the country: the Indomitable Lions must rediscover the identity that once made defeats like this unthinkable.<\/p>\n

The World Cup dream is gone, but the debate about Cameroon\u2019s future has only just begun.<\/p>\n
