Former Cameroon international Yvonne Leuko has spoken from the heart after the Indomitable Lionesses failed to qualify for the 2026 Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the team\u2019s second consecutive elimination as \u201cpainful and disappointing.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameroon fell 1-0 to Algeria in Yaound\u00e9 on Tuesday, confirming a 3-1 aggregate loss that ends their hopes of reaching next year\u2019s finals in Morocco.<\/p>\n

For Leuko, who represented her country for more than a decade, the result was a bitter pill to swallow.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAnother non-qualification\u2026 honestly, it\u2019s time we start asking ourselves serious questions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlgeria came here and beat us at home \u2014 that says a lot. It\u2019s really disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The 33-year-old, who featured at two FIFA Women\u2019s World Cups, admitted that watching her former teammates struggle was deeply emotional.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be watching the next Women\u2019s AFCON from afar again. What kind of scenario is this?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt really hurts to see our national women\u2019s team in this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The loss has sparked widespread calls for accountability and reform within the women\u2019s football setup in Cameroon. For Leuko, the message is clear \u2014 it\u2019s time to rebuild.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe badge deserves respect,\u201d she said. \u201cCameroon has too much talent to keep falling short like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A member of Cameroon\u2019s golden generation, Yvonne Leuko Chibosso was known for her defensive grit, leadership and emotional commitment on and off the pitch. She represented Cameroon at two FIFA Women\u2019s World Cups (2015 and 2019) and several WAFCON tournaments, helping the Lionesses reach two continental finals in 2016 and 2018. A respected voice even after retirement, Leuko continues to advocate for progress in women\u2019s football \u2014 her passion for the game undimmed, her love for the Lionesses unchanged.<\/p>\n

Cameroon\u2019s exit not only rules them out of WAFCON 2026, but also eliminates their chance of competing in the 2027 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup qualifiers, marking a painful chapter for a side once seen as a powerhouse in African women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n

Even in disappointment, Leuko\u2019s words capture the emotion of a nation still waiting for its Lionesses to roar again.<\/p>\n
