The desert foxes of Algeria and the Mambas of Mozambique, have punched their tickets for the quarter finals of the 2022 African Nations Championship ongoing in Algeria.<\/p>\n

Host Algeria, had already secured their place for the quarter finals before the last round of games in Group A, following wins over Libya and Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

In their last Group game played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Saturday evening, Algeria defeated Mozambique 1#0, to make it three wins in as many games for the host.<\/p>\n

Hocine Dehiri scored the lone goal of the game at the seventh minute of play, too keep Algeria’s 100% win record in the competition.<\/p>\n

Despite their defeat, the Mambas of Mozambique booked their spot for the last eight. Chiquinho Conde’s side had recorded four points from their two previous group games, following wins against Libya and a draw against Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for Mozambique, the result of the other Group A game played at the 19 May 1956 stadium in Annaba, did not affect their position in the group.<\/p>\n

The Mambas are reaching the quarter finals for the first time, in just their second participation at the competition.<\/p>\n

Libya beats Ethiopia but both exit<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mediterranean Knights of Libya came from a goal down to beat the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia 3#1 at the 19 May 1956 stadium in Annaba.<\/p>\n

Gatoch Panom had put Ethiopia in front from the penalty spot at the 39 minute of play, but Ali Abu Arqoub drew the game level before the break.<\/p>\n

Abdoulati Al Abasi and Anis Mohamed netted in the second segment to secure a 3#1 win for Libya, but their two defeats in games against Algeria and Mozambique means Correntin Martins’ side could only finished third in group A, a point behind second placed Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Results of Day 3 in Group A<\/p><\/div>\n

Libya therefore joins bottom placed Ethiopia out of the competition.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia’s coach Webetu Abate, says the lessons have been learned.<\/p>\n

“The competition was not bad for us. We played very well in the first and second games but it wasn’t to be. We have been building a team in the last two years. We attended the AFCON and the CHAN. There is no pressure. We are going step by step. We were in the the host group like in the AFCON but we take the lessons and hope to be back stronger,” said Abate.<\/p>\n

\nOn the menu<\/strong><\/p>\n

Round three games in Group, will be played this Sunday.<\/p>\n

Senegal will host two times winners DR Congo at the 19 May 1956 stadium in Annaba, while Uganda will take on Ivory coast at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.<\/p>\n

Uganda current tops Group B with four points, followed by Senegal with three points. DR Congo has two points, while Ivory coast is bottom with just one point.<\/p>\n

Group C will be in action on Monday with Sudan vs Madagascar, while Group D and E will concluded the group phase on Tuesday, with Mauritania versus Mali and Niger versus Cameroon.<\/p>\n
