The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, has been cancelled after the visiting team refused to travel, citing internal disputes with their football federation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To salvage the occasion, FAM has organized a friendly match between the Flames’ starting XI and substitutes at the Bingu National Stadium, where the qualifier was originally set to take place.<\/p>\n

Under FIFA regulations, teams that fail to appear for scheduled fixtures without valid cause may be subject to disciplinary measures, including forfeiture. While there is no official decision yet, Malawi could be awarded a walkover victory if CAF rules in their favour.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, fans and officials in Lilongwe expressed disappointment, with some calling for tougher action against federations that fail to manage internal issues in time for international commitments.<\/p>\n

This latest controversy adds to a growing list of off-field challenges facing Equatorial Guinea\u2019s national setup. The team previously came under scrutiny during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where reports of discontent over player welfare surfaced.<\/p>\n
