Senegal returns to the 2022 African Nations Championship in Algeria set to kick-off from January 13 to February 4, after twelve years of absence from the competition.<\/p>\n

Journey to the final<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Senegal advanced past regional rivals Guinea despite a 1-0 second leg defeat resulting to a 1-1 aggregate tie, decided by penalty shootouts. Senegal outsmarted the host 5-3.<\/p>\n

An excellent strike from Maleye Diagne at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade and saves from goalkeeper Alioune Badara Faty ensured the lions of Teranga make it to this edition of the tournament.<\/p>\n

The Teranga Lions grabbed one of the three tickets in the Western zone alongside Mali and Mauritania.<\/p>\n

Nickname<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The home based National team of Senegal are also referred to as the Teranga Lions.<\/p>\n

This team B from Senegal are nicknamed the lions as well as the senior National team of the country. However the difference is clear since the CHAN is limited only to local players.<\/p>\n

Coach<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Pape Bouna Thiaw is the man in charge of Senegal\u2019s home-based national team heading to Algeria.<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old is a former professional Senegalese player(forward). He was part of the Senegalese national team that took part and made it to the quarter-Final stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup together with Aliou Cisse and other big names.<\/p>\n

He has been in charge of the teams since the demise of former coach Joseph Kotto and he led the local lions to grabbing their 3rd CHAN ticket after so long.<\/p>\n

Appearances<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Senegal\u2019s Team B have been to two CHAN tournament. That is in the maiden edition in 2009 and the following edition in 2011.<\/p>\n

Since then, they have failed to qualify to another finals of the African tournament strictly for locals.
\nThis will be Senegal\u2019s third chance of doing better as far as the competition is concerned.<\/p>\n

Group Fixtures<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Teranga lions are paired in group B and will go against Ivory Coast, Uganda and two time champions Dr Congo.<\/p>\n

Their campaign begins on January 14 against Ivory Coast, meet Uganda four days later and last in the group stage encounter will be DR Congo on January 22,2023.<\/p>\n

This will be the first time Senegal meets any of these teams in the African Nations Championship competition.<\/p>\n
