South Africa’s Belgian tactician Hugo Henri Broos is currently reflecting on his future in the Bafana Bafana dugout as speculations continue to link him with a return to a club job in his country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Belgian sources have it that coach Broos who recently guided South Africa to their best Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finish in 24 years could return to his homeland as Club Brugge have tabled interest in signing him as their sporting director.<\/p>\n

The 2017 AFCON winner punched above the weight of his South African team by beating DR Congo in the Bronze medal playoffs match to earn South Africa’s first podium finish since the 1998 tournament in Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n

Broos,71, is said to be reflecting on quitting the Bafana Bafana job despite having a contract that links him to it until the summer of 2026.<\/p>\n

However, he has now revealed he has informed his hierarchy of his desire to leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a conversation with the president \u2013 on Saturday, we played the match for third place and on Sunday we were in the hotel and I made an appointment with the president and said \u2018look, I\u2019d like to stop’. I think he was lucky that he was sitting down, otherwise he would\u2019ve fallen over.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to experience the criticism I received here over the last two years again\u2019. Now, everything is good. But in March we have a group of friendlies and if we disappoint, it starts all over again.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also, I\u2019m alone in South Africa. My family is here [in Belgium]. I\u2019m not going to do that anymore, two-and-a-half months I was not there. But it\u2019s a lot, especially when you have grandchildren then it\u2019s worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also the opposition of the league is not to be understood. I will give you an example: In May, we started to prepare, we still had some friendly matches and two qualifying matches for the World Cup and then the preparations for AFCON.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe league was scheduled until 31 December. So I decided to write a letter to the league\u2019s Chairman to ask to stop after Christmas and there was no reply. When the fixtures came out, first thing I looked at was when they break and they only stopped 31 December.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote another letter to explain that Sundowns players feature in so many competitions, they need a break before AFCON. 14 days later we receive a response, it starts with \u2018we support Bafana Bafana and the coach, but we could not change it due to the sponsors\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also said they discussed it with everyone, which is absolutely not true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the hiccups, Broos remains in charge of the Rainbow nation’s first team while the world waits for what next at a time his name is filtering in the rumor mill of the Cameroon coaching job.<\/p>\n
