Hours before Cameroon takes on the Central African Republic in the U20 women’s UNIFFAC zonal tourney, Aboumba Clarisse has told reporters that she and her teammates have their guard checked.<\/p>\n
In most competitions around the region, Cameroon dominates. However, the U20 women’s category has not been a fling for the great football nation; testament to this statement is the fact that Cameroon just qualified for their first U20 FIFA women’s World Cup since the tournament inception in 2002<\/p>\n
Clarisse and co are looking to get their first U20 women’s UNIFFAC zonal competition for the first time in as many years.<\/p>\n
Clarisse, a prodigy who has paraded around the junior women’s selections, now makes up part of the U20 team’s core. She refuses to minimize the two other teams present in the competition.<\/p>\n
“We will not underestimate the other teams, but take them very seriously.”<\/p>\n
Aboumba, who plays for premier women’s division one side (AWA FF), equally added that the team has been prepping in serenity ahead of this mini-tourney;<\/p>\n
“The atmosphere in our group is good with no major problems. They’re some faces absent in our team, but the group has been working since March 2023. If part of our teammates are not here, we can do the job,” she added.<\/p>\n
Playing in front of the 40 thousand capacity Reunification stadium, Clarisse admitted that they could feel pressure, but it will be transformed from duress to energy.<\/p>\n
“We feel immense pressure as we need to keep the same image of the world cup qualifications.”<\/p>\n
A multitude of Cameroon’s key players who played pivotal roles in qualifications are conspicuously absent, including team captain Naomi Eto and forward, Enganemben.<\/p>\n
Cameroon’s first real test is against CAR at 15:30 local time this Tuesday. Afterwards, the junior lionesses will face Congo on Thursday 15.<\/p>\n
