The head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s natoional team has admitted that South Africa are the toughest team they have faced so far at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).<\/p>\n
Super Eagles had to rely on penalties to win the semi final clash with the Bafana Bafana after regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw.<\/p>\n
The Portuguese tactician congratulated his counterpart from South Africa, Hugo Broos for the fantastic feat.<\/p>\n
“It was a very good victory against a very good team. This team have the best form of organisation because they play together many times,” Peseiro told journalists after the match.<\/p>\n
“South Africa created more problems for us than the other teams we have played against. They put lots of pressure on us with lots of quality. They have players with good quality. It was difficult to beat them.<\/p>\n
“For this I say congratulations to the team. I am congratulating him because most of the players are from Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. Congratulations to the coach also. I congratulated hhim on the pitch because they did a fantastic job. Today, Nigeria deserve the win as they also did. In penalties, our team are stronger.”<\/p>\n
The former Sporting CP and FC Porto coach also heaped praises on his team for the hard fought win.<\/p>\n
“The team fights together. Today, I introduced Terem Moffi and Kelechi Iheanacho who are playing for the first time in this tournalent. We can only start 11 players from 25 which makes it difficullt.<\/p>\n
“Our opponents were the best and a very good team. They did a fantastic job but I think our team deserved it.” He concluded.<\/p>\n
After Sebastien Haller’s goal for host, Cote d’Ivoire in the second semi final against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria will face the host in the final on Sunday.<\/p>\n
