As Nigeria’s senior men’s national team prepares to open their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, the captain of the team, Ahmed Musa has shown optimism in his side claiming the title.<\/p>\n
It has been 11 years since the Super Eagles last won the African title in 2013 (South Africa).<\/p>\n
Musa who is one of the two surviving players in the team that won the title in 2013 alongside Kenneth Omeruo is confident that feat can be replicated.<\/p>\n
“The target of the coach is to win the AFCON since he came,” Musa told journalists in Abidjan during the pre-match press conference.<\/p>\n
“We know that it has been ten years since we won the AFCON so we have to put in our best on the pitch and not on the social media. Insha Allah we are working very hard to do that. By the grace of God, come February 11, we are going to return to Nigeria as African champions.<\/p>\n
“We believe in ourselves. The players believe in each other. In football, you can make mistakes if you do mistakes the opponents will not score against you. We are doing our best to correct the mistakes and see what we can do.<\/p>\n
“Nigerians need to believe in the Super Eagles and we will never let them down.”<\/p>\n
The three-time African champions will be without players like Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Boniface, and recently Umar Sadiq due to injuries.<\/p>\n
“It’s a very big blow for us to loose teammates but there is nothing we can do.” Musa continued.
\n“We are going to miss them and I talked with each and everyone of them because we have that believe that we can do it.<\/p>\n
“Yesterday we had a meeting with Wilfred Ndidi and he gave us his views and we have seen what Victor Boniface did on social media by wising us luck. That is the spirit of sportsmanship. When you are out it’s to encourage yourself and teammates that they can do it. It’s just to wish them the best of luck to come back strong.” He concluded.<\/p>\n
