Five out of the 68 officials listed for next month’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) are women referees.<\/p>\n
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) this week released a list of referees for 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n
The four women officials include a referee, an assistant, and three Video Assistant Referees (VAR).<\/p>\n
Only Karboubi Boubchra from Morocco is the lone women’s referee for the tournament.<\/p>\n
Zambia’s Diana Chicotesha will serve as an assistant referee.<\/p>\n
For VAR, Rivet Maria Pakuita Cinquela (Mauritius), Mukansanga Salima Rhadia (Rwanda), and Akhona Zennith Makalima (South Africa) will oversee the referee monitors from the VAR room.<\/p>\n
The remaining 63 officials are men, a testament to the growth of women’s football refereeing in men’s games.<\/p>\n
AFCON 2023 will get underway on January 13 and runs through February 11, 2024.<\/p>\n
It is the 34th edition of the competition to be hosted in five cities; Abidjan, Yamussoukro, Bouake, Khorogo, and San Pedro.<\/p>\n
