The president of the Confederation of African Football Dr Patrice Motsepe, has said that he is proud that Algeria has hosted the best African Nations Championship (CHAN) in the history of the competition.
Algeria is hosting the Seventh edition of the CHAN, which has been making headlines since the competition kicked off on January 13.
Being the very fast edition of the competition with 18 Nations participating, Algeria has lived up to expectations, as the competition draws to a close on Saturday February 04, with the final to pit host Algeria against Senegal.
“Let me start by thanking the football leadership in Algeria and also the people of Algeria for coming to the stadium even when Algeria wasn’t playing,” Dr Patrice Motsepe told the press in Algeria.
“We always know that Algeria has a proud football history and what has happened over the last few weeks has been an example to show the rest of the continent and the rest of the world that Algeria is a world class venue for hosting some the best competitions on the African continent.
“I’m very proud because we had the best CHAN competition in the history of CHAN in Africa in Algeria and I’m very thankful and very proud for the way it’s gone.”
61-year-old Motsepe, pinpointed the areas where Algeria made the difference in their CHAN, as compared to the previous editions.
“The people came to the stadiums, the highest number ever. Also the quality of football in the field. In the beginning you see some of the teams were nervous but as the competition continued, the quality football was very good.
“Many players were signed. I know that there were scouts from many football Nations in the world, but given the numbers of players who were signed based on their performance over the past few weeks, that’s excellent. I think one of the things I love immensely is just the passion for football amongst the people of Algeria, the love of football amongst the people in Algeria and also the love I’ve seen in many countries in Africa. That means that our young boys and girls who wants to have a future in football, will succeed and they have the support of the people of all the Nations in the African continent.”
Immediately after the CHAN, Algeria will host the 2023 U17 AFCON, that will run from April 29, to May 19, 2023.
“The people of Algeria can be proud and I can be proud. I’m proud for the love of football by the people of Algeria, I’m proud of the quality of football that the Algerian Nation played during the competition and we all know the history of football in this country and we must give a message of encouragement to young Algerians and young Africans throughout the continent. To say to these Under 17 players that you will be playing amongst the best on the continent and the whole world will be watching you,” Motsepe added.
Both Algeria and Senegal will be in search of their first CHAN trophy, when they clash on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, in the final.
