Victoria United FC of Limbe has returned to the top-flight championship in Cameroon for the first time since 2004.
Junior Djacba’s first-half brace on Wednesday at the age-old Limbe Centenary stadium was enough to secure a 2-0 win against Aigle Royal of Moungo and qualification of OPOPO to the pinnacle of Cameroon football on the sidelines of a brilliant season.
Coach Guy Merlin’s team made the most of their chances from the spot and defended resolutely to earn a 13th win in 23 games and open a seven points gap at the top with two rounds of matches left.
Aigle were simply second best in the afternoon and have themselves to blame for being unable to reduce the gap on the leaders.
At home and in front of hundred of fans with black and white hearts, Victoria United FC started on the front foot and dominated Aigle Royal within the opening five minutes.
Despite having the required number of players, both sides started the game a man less, some school of thought suggesting it was all about mysticism.
Didiercole Allinga was brought down in the box as he struggles to twist past bodies in the crowded Aigle box. Without blinking, the Referee pointed to the spot to indicate a penalty for the hosts.
Djacba stepped up and beat Collins Maifanya on goal for the visitors to make it 1-0 for Victoria United.
The goal raised the voices of the already loud home fans as believe heightened this could be the day.
Yindui Bouba finally joined his mates on the pitch as the 11th player for Victoria just around the 12th minute of play
Victoria spent a bunch of the half in the visitors penalty area but most of what came towards Collins Maifanya met a man equal to it.
Victoria won and converted a second penalty in the 36th minute and Djacba stepped up again to convert it for his 11th goal of the season.
At 2-0, it was game done set and match.
The hosts took the 2-0 advantage to the interval though Aigle showed glimpses of quality.
Victoria United dropped the tempo in the second segment, allowing Aigle with the ball but not in dangerous portions of the pitch.
It was just about game management throughout the second segment and at full-time Victoria United FC were Champions of Elite 2 five months after they were promoted from to the second tier championship.
The results earns the club promotion as champions as Lausanne who were on their heels lost against Foncha Street FC away in Bamenda.
Lausanne, Dynamo, Aigle Royal and Stade Bertoua will battle for the other ticket to Elite 1 during the next two playing days.
