Under the watchful eye of Valentine Nguele, the team’s goalkeeper coach, Chrismilienne Onomo Etaba and Vanessa Signé are fine-tuning their skills ahead of the tournament in Malabo from September 17.
Nguele insists that for her players, the road to success goes well beyond the technical side—it’s about building a warrior mindset.
For Coach Nguele, friendly matches are a crucial test, not a flawless performance. The two goalkeepers faced tough opponents in the U17 Lionesses and the U17 boys of Agora FC, and the goals they conceded were seen as valuable lessons.
“It’s important to concede goals in these matches. They allow us to evaluate our work, identify our shortcomings, and make adjustments where needed,” she explained.
She noted Onomo’s good performance in the first match and praised Vanessa’s resilience after conceding two goals in the second. “When you concede, you have to find a way to get back on your feet, analyze what went wrong, and, most importantly, stay focused. These are the details we’ll keep working on in training. They are ready to face their opponents.

“The Power of a “Steel Mentality”.
Nguele believes that stepping up to the African Champions League requires a different kind of preparation—one that focuses on mental fortitude. “It’s a high-level competition that demands intense focus and a warrior’s mindset,” she stated. “It might happen that you concede a goal in the very first minute. How do you react? Do you give up? Do you feel sorry for yourself? No. That’s where mental strength comes in.
These goalkeepers must have a steel mentality.”

She pointed out that their recent call-up to the national team has given them an extra boost of confidence. “Being selected for the national team is a huge honor. It has truly boosted their mental game.”
A Dream Come True
Nguele is visibly proud to be part of this journey. “It’s a privilege to play in this kind of competition. We used to see it happen in Europe, and now that we’re a part of it in Africa, it’s a huge opportunity.”
Beyond the personal honor, she is focused on motivating the players to take pleasure in the game and show the world the quality of the Guinness Super League.
