Seini Hamit was the hero as Union Sportive of Douala outscored Bamboutos FC of Mbouda by the odd goal in five this Sunday in the delayed match day clash of the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship fixture played at the Japoma Annex stadium.
The former Leopard of Douala forward scored a hat-trick to help Union Sportive register their first victory of the season in their second home game this campaign.
Boris Karche scored his second goal of the season and Sampson Kwasi opened his goal counter but the goals counted for nothing as Seini won it for the Nasara Gamakai with a borrowed time goal that created total frenzy in the camp of the hosts.
Bamboutos had hoped to build on their impressive 2-0 win against Gazelle FA on match day two while Union Sportive of coach Merville Gangoum knew the dile was cast and his first win of the season was the only idea running across the minds of the expectant home fans.
The game got off to a quickfire start as Seini put the hosts ahead after just two minutes but Bamboutos replied immediately through Katche Boris. The seventh minute equalizer from the former Rangers front man meant he had scored in consecutive appearances in the top-flight.
Both sides then settled into the contest with the kind of cautious optimism that limited goal mouth actions.
Goalkeeper Samuel Elimbi in goal for USD was the busier than his colleague in goal for Bamboutos FC as the first segment ended in a parity score.
The start of the second segment was almost a replica of the first as Seini restored Union’s lead seven eight into the second segment. The goal was a deserved reward for the hosts who had returned after the interval being more purposeful.
Bamboutos FC wastefulness in front of goal denied them the equalizer on two occasions before Kwasi made matters level 21 minutes from time.
The game then entered an exciting phase after both sides were reduced to ten as the match officials sent off a player apiece.
The thousands of fans that stayed in the stands despite the rain were served suspense and spectacle till the end.
Just when coach Asare Bediako and his Bamboutos FC players were about settling for a point, Seini scored the late winner to earn all three points for the five-time champions of Cameroon. The hat-trick makes Seini the first player to score a triple this campaign.
The final whistle sparked joyous scenes in the Union Sportive faction as one of the championship’s highly-rated fixture lived up to expectation going by what happened on the pitch.
The defeat is Bamboutos’ second this season, after the opening round defeat to PWD a fortnight ago. Union Sportive on their part will be excited to have seen off the winless run, going into Wednesday’s match day four matches across the country.
