Stage one of the ongoing U20 AFCON in Egypt came to a close on Monday February 27.

Benin and Tunisia completed the last 8 of the tournament after nine days of intense competition.

18 games have been played so far with a total of 31 goals scored , with four courtesy Senegal’s Pape Demba Diop.

The lion cub of Senegal and Gambia are the only teams to have won all group games moreso without conceding a goal.

Malick Daf side registered one of their best group stage performance in this tournament history , defeating seven times champions Nigeria one nil in their opener, seeing off Mozambique three zero and sinking host Egypt in a four nil thriller .

The team has scored a total of eight goals, producing three different man of the match winners from Captain Samba Diallo to Papa Amadou Diallo and top scorer Pape Demba Diallo. With such an amazing performance Malick Daf’s ambitions is to reach the FIFA U20 world cup with this team.

As for Gambia, the young scorpions are a thorn to all group opponents.These three time bronze medallist Started off strong winning North African giants Tunisia by one goal, Zambia was an easy target for Alagie Saine and teammates in day two before their finals one zero win over Benin in day three.

Gambia scored 4 goals with winger Salifu Colley and captain Alagie Saine being the star of the team .

Egypt and Mozambique are the only teams to have exited the competition without scoring a goal.

However all 12 participants recorded at least a point.

South Sudan becomes the first Nation since Benin on 2021 to reach the quarter finals of the U20 AFCON in their very first participation.

The quarter finals opens on Thursdays with

Senegal vs Benin (3pm CAT) at the Cairo International Stadium

Nigeria vs Uganda (6pm CAT) Suez Canal Stadium

On Friday March 03

Gambia vs South Sudan (3pm CAT) El Hodoub Stadium in Alexandria

Congo Vs Tunisia (6pm CAT) Cairo International Stadium
