The U-17 Atlas Lions of Morocco arrived in Constantine in Algeria 24 hours before the start of the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19 in Algeria.

The full squad and its complementary staff arrived on Friday April 28, via a chartered Star Airlines flight accorded them by FIFA.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe plus the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lekjaa and King Mohammed VI’s tact in negotiation allowed the team to travel to honor their commitment and give a chance to the next generation to compete.

Morocco missed the African Nations Championship (CHAN) earlier this year in Algeria because its national career which is the sole transporter of their national teams wasn’t cleared to travel directly to Constantine.

The move by Morocco and the heads of the other football governing body has earned positive feedback at a time when Morocco’s diplomatic strides are considered a reference.

Morocco is pooled in Group B alongside two-time winners the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, COSAFA duo South Africa and Zambia.

They will open their group matches this Sunday, April 29 against COSAFA vice champions South Africa before facing Nigeria and Zambia in the other group games.

The best four national teams at the tournament will qualify for the 2023 U-17 FIFA World Cup later this year.
