Tunisia’s national football team has announced a major overhaul of its coaching structure, parting ways with head coach Sami Trabelsi and his entire technical staff following the country’s disappointing exit from the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

The decision was confirmed on Sunday by the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), which stated that the “contractual relationship” with Trabelsi and his coaching crew had been terminated by mutual consent. The move followed Tunisia’s Round of 16 defeat to Mali, in which the Carthage Eagles were eliminated on penalties after a 1–1 draw, despite playing much of the game with a numerical advantage.

Trabelsi, 57, had returned to the national team fold in February 2025 for a second stint in charge, having previously coached Tunisia from 2011 to 2013. His tenure saw mixed fortunes: while he successfully guided the team to unbeaten qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the early AFCON exit proved costly.

Supporters and pundits alike had called for accountability after the Carthage Eagles failed to capitalise on their opportunities against Mali, and the federation’s swift action reflects a desire to reset and rebuild ahead of upcoming international commitments.

With the coaching position now vacant, the FTF is expected to begin a search for a new manager in the coming days, with discussions reportedly underway about whether to appoint a foreign coach or promote from within Tunisia’s footballing ranks to restore confidence and stability to the national side.
