Fans of the Atlas Lions of Morocco have re-emphasized the country’s ambition to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for later this year.

Just like coach Walid Regragui a few months back, the fans have started their country target to emulate Cote D’Ivoire in the next edition of the AFCON.

The fans declared Morocco’s intention to host and win the coveted trophy during the pre-match fans experience this Friday evening at the newly-constructed Mouley Abdellah stadium in Rabat as they prepared for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash against Niger.

“This Time the trophy is our dream, the whole kingdom is behind the team,” two banners displayed by thousands of fans just minutes before kickoff read.

Though it wasn’t an AFCON related fixture, the fact that it is the first game giant 68500 edifice to host the opening game and the final of the 2025 continental soccer jamboree gave the fans the best occasion to reveal Morocco’s goal.

Morocco lastly won the coveted AFCON trophy in 1976. A whole generation have waited for 49 years to repeat the feat – coming close in 2004, finishing runners-up with a team that had Walid Regragui as right-back.

The country’s recent resurgence and the semi-final run in the 2022 FIFA World cup has renewed the hunger of the team and its fans, thus explaining the new ambitions.

Walid Regragui, the coach who guided them through that World Cup run has continued the building process and has maintained he has as main target to win the AFCON for his nation.

“We have important goals. At the Mohammed VI Football Complex there is a photo of the national team that was the last to win the Africa Cup in 1976. Every day, when the players come here, they look at the photo and are inspired. My goal as a coach is not to remove this photo, but to put a new photo of the next winners here,” he said in an interview on CNN earlier this year.

The Atlas Lions, making their 20th AFCON appearance, are considered one of the tournament’s favorites and candidates to host and win like Cote D’Ivoire did in the 2023 edition.

The 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Morocco on Sunday, December 21, with the hosts facing Comoros in the opening match of Group A before facing Mali and Zambia later in the group stage of the 24-nation competition returning to Morocco for the first time since 1988.
