The transfer window for the 2024/2025 football season is now open in Cameroon.
Elite One, Elite Two, Guinness Super League clubs as well as amateur clubs have began engaging players ahead of the new season.
In Cameroon, the transfer window is often marred by controversies, back bitting and above all unprofessionalism from elite one and two clubs considered to be professional clubs.
Professionally and under normal circumstances, the business of transferring a player from one club to another has to involve the two clubs concerned, the player and the parent of the player (in a case where the player is under 21 years). In some instances, player agents are also involved. However, this is not the case.
Elite One and two clubs before recruiting a player now put as a precondition the presentation of the players ‘Liberation letter’ from the former club not minding if the player is still on contract or not.
This situation has plunged clubs and players in disagreements especially when these players want to move by all possible means.
“A very big club is in need of a player from my team. But I am surprised the club doesn’t want to have anything to do with us. They’re rather sending the player to bring his liberation letter”, a club official who refused to be named told kick442.com.
“The said player is still under contract with us and now he wants to leave just like that. It has created a very tense working atmosphere between us”, the club official added.
The above practice is very unethical and can sometimes cause clubs rift like the recent incident between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid which saw the latter report the Blaugrana club for directly holding talks with their player, Antoine Griezmann though he was still under contract.
According to our findings, this kind of situation is often common with the “big” clubs in the elite one championship. These clubs are specialists in asking players to come with their liberation letters before they can engage any discussions with them.
Clubs being business entities should be treated as such and in strict respect of FIFA guidelines.
