The Syndicate of Professional Footballers in Cameroon (Synafoc) has tasked stakeholders to open investigation and communicate on the shooting incident that marred PWD’s MTN Elite One clash against Fauve Azur Elite last Sunday in Bamenda.
For starters, the match day One meeting of the Abakwa Boys and the Faya Boys at the Yong Francis Arena only lasted 45 minutes as state security officials reacted to gunshots they had heard from around the venue by firing shots themselves.
The shooting escalated and prevented the match officials from continuing the game while the players were ferried away in police escorts.
The issue has animated debate in Cameroon football circles of the past four days and as stakeholders including fans of PWD and YOSA await a recommendation about the situation.
Synafoc in their regular battle for the interest of its members.
A release published this Tuesday to that effect has raised a number of pertinent issues.
“The National Union of Cameroonian Footballers (SYNAFOC) has learned with dismay and horror of the events that led to the stoppage of the match of the 11th day of the MTN Elite One championship between PWD of Bamenda and Fauves Azur at the Yong Francis Arena stadium in Bamenda.
While welcoming the fact that no loss of human life was to be deplored, it denounces with the utmost energy these extremely serious events which have endangered the physical integrity of the players, officials and the public,” the release stated.
The release continued with a reminder to all and sundry before recommending investigation;
“We remind everyone that football is first and foremost a game that brings together men, women, and children; that therefore a good football match takes place when the safety of the actors (players, officials and spectators) is guaranteed.
“We call for an investigation to be opened so that full light is shed on the responsibilities of all parties following this serious incident.
“Finally, the Health and Safety of the players must be the priority, it calls on the organizers and clubs to be more concerted and responsible in the choice of venues to host the matches of the MTN Elite One, MTN Elite Two and Guinness Super League professional championships.
Finally, he wants to reassure the players of his determination to defend their Rights and Interests.”
The Transitional body in charge of professional football in Cameroon through their SG Faustin Blaise Mbida has called for calm, but quickly reacted by scheduling YOSA’s home game away in Mbouda.
