In a strange move, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon defender Jérôme Onguéné Junior has endorsed the surprised retirement of ex-mate, Andre Onana Onana.
The Frankfurt defender who played for Cameroon alongside Inter Milan’s Onana between 2018 to date is one of hundreds who have liked Onana’s retirement letter posted on Twitter this Friday.
While many were busy commenting the decision, Onguene took to Twitter to offer an additional ‘like’ to the strange decision.
Onguéné’s move can be considered a confirmation that there are a number of unhappy faces in the Lions den, if not why will a player like the retirement of his mate at 26?
Though a proven sweeper for Red Bull Salzburg over the years, Onguéné moved to German Bundesliga side Frankfurt last summer, but failed to make Cameroon’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The 25-year-old defender was part of the Cameroon squad that participated at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament earlier this year on home soil and played three games to help the Indomitable Lions finish third.
Since Rigobert Song’s appointment in February this year, the Mbalmayo native hasn’t been invited to the national team.
kick442.com has come across some anonymous sources who believe Jérôme who skippered France to the 2016 Under-19 European championship is unhappy about his present situation with the national team and could be considering retirement too.
The ex-Genoa center-back counts ten caps for the multiple African champions. Unfortunately, that journey looks like it’s not going as planned just like Onana’s.
Both players dished other options to play for Cameroon and are very close friends.
