- The Cameroon international played for Steaua in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at AFC Harmannstadt and was racially abused after the game
- Coach Elias Charalambous rendered support to the player in the post-match conference
Steaua Bucarest defender Joyskim Dawa Tchakounte has suffered racist abuse online following his club’s 2-2 draw away to AFC Harmannstadt on Saturday.
The defender was sent off in the 60th minute, after giving away a penalty that led to the equaliser. After the match, Dawa took responsibility for his error, which cost the team the three points, but not everyone was happy.
Several offensive replies, including monkey emojis, appeared on Saturday in the comments section under the full-back’s most recent Instagram post.
Reacting after the game, coach Elias Charalambous rendered support to Dawa;
“We talked about him, he’s a player who has had a fantastic performance this season, he’s been making a spectacular effort since pre-season, he’s a footballer who works every day. Mistakes are part of life, they happen, we have nothing to blame Dawa. I would also like to talk about the situation that upset both him and the rest of us, racism is something that has no place in sports, even in life.”
Steaua Bucarest fans have developed the reputation of racially attacking their players especially when results are poor – Dawa is on the receiving end this time around.
The Romanian football league managing body is yet to communicate on the issue.
