Head Coach of the Spanish National team has been fired from his position as shepherd of the Red Fury and replaced almost immediately with Luis De La Fuente, a decision taken by the executive of the Spanish football federation.
This comes less than 48 hours after Spain’s disappointing elimination from the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar by Morocco during post match penalty shootouts.
Spain were sent back home in the knockout phase of the Competition after recording heavy victories in the group stage, beating Costa Rica 7-0 but were booted out in the round of 16.
They held Germany to a 1-1 draw but lost to Japan by two goals to one but sailed through to the round of 16 as runner up of group E.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) took to their social media handle this Thursday morning to confirm the information.
“The Asturian coach managed to give new impetus to the national team since his arrival, in 2018, through a profound renewal that has consolidated a generational change in the team and in Spanish football.
“Luis Enrique qualified for two Final Four of the UEFA Nations League, of the three he played as coach; and he reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 with his own stamp and through a defined style. He opted for young talent and has sown hope for the future of the Spanish team” a portion of the post read.
“The RFEF energetically wishes Luis Enrique and his team the best of luck in their future professional projects. The coach earns the love and admiration of his collaborators in the national team and of the entire Federation, which will always be his home.”
Less than an hour later, former Spain Under-21 boss, Luis de la Fuente was confirmed as Enrique’s replacement.
Luis Enrique took over the Spanish National team in 2018 after Spain’s poor run at the World Cup in Russia. One of his first major task was leading Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where they were also beaten on penalties, by Italy.
