Senegal returns to the 2022 African Nations Championship in Algeria set to kick-off from January 13 to February 4, after twelve years of absence from the competition.
Journey to the final
Senegal advanced past regional rivals Guinea despite a 1-0 second leg defeat resulting to a 1-1 aggregate tie, decided by penalty shootouts. Senegal outsmarted the host 5-3.
An excellent strike from Maleye Diagne at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade and saves from goalkeeper Alioune Badara Faty ensured the lions of Teranga make it to this edition of the tournament.

The Teranga Lions grabbed one of the three tickets in the Western zone alongside Mali and Mauritania.
Nickname
The home based National team of Senegal are also referred to as the Teranga Lions.
This team B from Senegal are nicknamed the lions as well as the senior National team of the country. However the difference is clear since the CHAN is limited only to local players.
Coach
Pape Bouna Thiaw is the man in charge of Senegal’s home-based national team heading to Algeria.
The 41-year-old is a former professional Senegalese player(forward). He was part of the Senegalese national team that took part and made it to the quarter-Final stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup together with Aliou Cisse and other big names.

He has been in charge of the teams since the demise of former coach Joseph Kotto and he led the local lions to grabbing their 3rd CHAN ticket after so long.
Appearances
Senegal’s Team B have been to two CHAN tournament. That is in the maiden edition in 2009 and the following edition in 2011.
Since then, they have failed to qualify to another finals of the African tournament strictly for locals.
This will be Senegal’s third chance of doing better as far as the competition is concerned.

Group Fixtures
The Teranga lions are paired in group B and will go against Ivory Coast, Uganda and two time champions Dr Congo.
Their campaign begins on January 14 against Ivory Coast, meet Uganda four days later and last in the group stage encounter will be DR Congo on January 22,2023.
This will be the first time Senegal meets any of these teams in the African Nations Championship competition.

Alpha Oumar Sow, now former Senegalese professional player, has been Senegal all time best scorer at the African Nations championship. He marked his name during the 2009 edition in Ivory Coast.

He scored the equalizing goal In the semi final against Ghana in a 1-1 tie. He equally scored the lone goal of the third place 1-2 loss game to Zambia. This is the highest scored by a Senegalese player in the history of their participation in the CHAN.
Star Players
Goalkeeper Aliou Badry who was a part of the 2021 AFCON squad in Cameroon, will be one to watch out for in Algeria. He is a home based player who plays for the Senegalese National team and home club Casa Sports. He equally has won a Cup double with his club at home.
He was one of the brains behind Senegal’s qualification to Algeria with his saves in the penalty shootout against Guinea. He may definitely be the first choice keeper for Senegal when the CHAN kick-starts next week.

ASC Jaraaf is the most popular club in Senegal who plays in the Senegal premier league and also has the most number of National title won.(28)
They are holders of 15 league titles, 11 cups, 3 super cup amongst others.

Jaraaf has appeared in the continental stage 13 times, the most of any club from Senegal.
They have represented Senegal in the CAf Champions League on thirteen occasions and the Confederation Cup on Four different occasions. But their best result was reaching the CAF champions league semi final.
Jaraaf has two players in the CHAN list for Algeria.
Casa Sports, winners of the double in Senegalese football last season, have three players in Thiaw’s squad while famous club Génération Foot has six representatives in the team.
