President Paul Biya dedicated a significant portion of his youth day speech to celebrating the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and their triumphant qualification for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.

The address, which lasted nearly 13 minutes on monday February 10, served not only as a congratulatory message but also as a strategic call to action, emphasizing the importance of unity, discipline, and continued government support.

The President began by reflecting on the Indomitable Lions’ disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

He said “In my message to you last year, in similar circumstances, shortly after our country’s challenging campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, I assured you that we would return to winning ways.”

President Biya then pivoted to celebrate the team’s recent success, attributing their qualification to the talent and dedication of Cameroon’s youth.

He remarked, “Our brilliant qualification for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted by Morocco, is testimony to the remarkable achievements of which, you, our talented and courageous youth are capable, by dint of hard work and discipline.”

Beyond mere acknowledgement, President Biya pledged unwavering government support for the team’s continued success.

“On behalf of you all, I would like to sincerely congratulate our brave Indomitable Lions and their managers,” he stated. “I urge them to forge ahead this path, to continue bringing joy and pride to the Cameroonian people and to set an example to our youth. The Government, under my leadership, will spare no effort to give them all the support they need.”

Finally, President Biya stressed the crucial role of internal cohesion in achieving future victories. He closed the sports-focused segment of his address with a call to action, stating,

“However, I believe I should emphasize here, that the positive momentum we are celebrating together today will bear fruit only if harmony, solidarity and team spirit prevail within and around the team. In this regard, I appeal to the sense of responsibility of all stakeholders.”

This reinforces the government’s stands over the leadership of the Indomitable Lions, and it is expected to ease tensions between the federation and the technical staff as they prepare for the World Cup qualifiers in March

Under the leadership of coach Marc Brys, the indomitable lions have maintained an unbeaten run.
