Paulo Jorge Rebelo Duarte has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the Togolese national team (NT), bringing an end to to his three years tenure as their lead trainer.

The decision to quit the job was announced this Thursday after the Portuguese tactician informed the executive committee of the Federation of the move.

Duarte, 55 had been in charge of the The Hawks since 2021 – helping the West African nation build a competitive team which unfortunately failed to reach the finals of continental tournaments.

Duarte became manager of Togo in May 2021, following the departure of Claude Le Roy. As a result of his commitments to Primeiro de Agosto the deal was only made effective in August, with Jonas Komla acting as caretaker until his arrival.

Despite the poor returns, the Togolese Football federation (FTF) was keen on continuing their collaboration with Duarte though he opted to step aside and pave way for the arrival of a new crew.

The onus is now on the FTF to get a new man into the dugout as soon as possible, especially with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers starting in September.

On his part, Duarte, the man who led Burkina Faso to a third-place finish at AFCON 2017 and can boast of a 20-year-old managerial experience is free again and hoping to find a new opportunity that works with his style.

His 1° de Agosto, Sfaxien and other experiences makes him a hot property in the market especially at a time Nigeria is looking for a new manager to replace the sacked Findini George.
