A fresh twist has emerged in Cameroon’s search for a new head coach to replace Marc Peter Brys, with Frenchman Patrice Carteron now strongly linked to the Indomitable Lions bench after FECAFOOT failed to secure Paul Put, who had initially been among the federation’s preferred choices.

According to sources close to the ongoing consultations, Carteron’s name has quickly risen to the top of internal discussions at Tsinga following FECAFOOT’s instruction to the Direction Technique Nationale (DTN) to propose credible alternatives capable of rebuilding the national team’s technical direction.

A respected and experienced option

Carteron, 55, is one of the most decorated French coaches on the African continent. His résumé includes a CAF Champions League title with TP Mazembe, stints with clubs like Raja Casablanca, Al Ahly, and Zamalek, as well as experience with national teams, notably Mali.

For a FECAFOOT leadership seeking a coach with “strong African pedigree” and the personality to stabilise a divided squad, Carteron fits the profile. A technical advisor familiar with the process said:
“Carteron has experience, titles, and a good understanding of African dressing rooms. These are qualities FECAFOOT cannot ignore at this stage.”

Why Paul Put slipped away

Paul Put had been considered a realistic option earlier in the process due to his successful spells with Burkina Faso, Gambia and other African sides. However, discussions reportedly stalled due to administrative complications and concerns over his availability.

With Put now out of the race, the federation is accelerating its search for a coach who can bring clarity and authority after the turbulent Marc Brys period.

FECAFOOT’s new urgency

The federation is believed to be increasingly eager to appoint a head coach quickly, as upcoming international fixtures leave little room for prolonged negotiations. The DTN is expected to submit its final recommendations soon, but Carteron’s profile has already gained significant traction.

Insiders describe him as a “realistic and strong candidate” rather than a mere name on a long list. His ability to handle high-pressure jobs, develop tactical structures, and work in challenging environments is seen as aligning with FECAFOOT’s ambition to rebuild a competitive, disciplined national team.

A decision that could shape a new era

For many Cameroonian supporters, the next coaching decision will signal whether FECAFOOT truly intends to give the Indomitable Lions a fresh start after months of administrative tension and a disappointing World Cup playoff exit.

Carteron may not be the only name under consideration, but with Paul Put no longer in the picture, the French technician has become one of the most credible and experienced options available.

The coming days are expected to provide more clarity — and perhaps, the beginning of a new chapter for the five-time African champions.
