André Onana kept his fourth clean sheet of the season as Manchester United shared the spoils with Crystal Palace in a goalless draw at Selhurst Park.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, including two shots that hit the woodwork, United struggled to convert opportunities into goals. Onana’s standout moment came with a remarkable double save from Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr in the second half, which was crucial for securing a point.
With four saves, the former inter Milan player was named man of the match, his first this season.
After the match, the Cameroon international expressed disappointment, stating that while he appreciated the clean sheet, the team’s ambition was to win. “I think [my save] is not so important,” he told Sky Sports. “Because we didn’t win. We are such a big club; when we go somewhere, I think we have the ambition to try to win”
“We didn’t win, but I’m happy for the work and sacrifice of my teammates. I feel we were better than them. We had so many chances but, unfortunately, didn’t score. It’s difficult to go back with one point when we deserved to win.”
The 28-year-old acknowledged that while it is always nice to keep a clean sheet, winning is paramount for Manchester United. “One hundred percent, it’s always nice to keep a clean sheet, but the most important thing, especially playing for Manchester United, is that you have to win. We didn’t lose today, but we came here with the mentality [to win], so we go home disappointed.”
United dominated possession with 67%, attempting over 15 shots and hitting six on target but failing to score. “Football, sometimes, you cannot control everything,” Onana added. “We were dominant; we had more chances. I had faith in my guys. We hit the bar twice and, hopefully, in the coming games, we will score a lot.”
Reflecting on the match’s significance, he concluded, “We had an important game for us to win, but I go back home sad because Manchester United, everywhere we go, has to play good football; we have to win; we have to be dominant, create chances, and we have to finish.”
With this result, United remains in 11th position on the league table with seven points and will face Twente on September 25 in the Europa League.
