Olivier Mbaizo Extends Stay with Philadelphia Union

Olivier Mbaizo has penned a contract extension with Philadelphia Union, ensuring his stay until 2026, with options through 2028.

The club announced on Thursday November 21,2024.Ernst Tanner , sporting director of the club praised the defender for his exceptional contributions to the side , which has prompted his contract extension.

“Olivier has been a consistent contributor to our backline since joining us in 2018, His speed and agility, along with his increasingly accurate passing percentage, continue to make him a valuable asset to the team and we are happy to have come to an agreement,” He said.

Since joining Philadelphia Union in 2018, the cameroon international has established himself as a consistent performer, making 112 appearances in MLS and logging an impressive 8,080 minutes on the pitch.

He has tallied 13 assists throughout his tenure, showcasing his ability to support attacking plays from the defensive end. In the 2024 season, Mbaizo played in 21 matches, starting 12 of them, and provided two crucial assists. Notably, he achieved a career-high pass accuracy of 82.1%, completing 340 out of 414 passes, which underscores his growing influence in build-up play.

On the international front, Mbaizo has earned about 14 caps for the Cameroon national team and was part of the squad that competed in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His combination of speed, agility, and improving passing accuracy makes him a key asset for both club and country, capable of shutting down opposing attacks while also contributing to offensive maneuvers.

Philadelphia Union finds itself in a transitional phase after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017 and parting ways with head coach Jim Curtin. Despite these challenges, Mbaizo’s contract extension is viewed as a positive development for the team’s future.

His commitment reflects not only his dedication to the club but also offers stability as the Union looks to rebuild and reestablish themselves as contenders in MLS.
