- Two-time champions of the MTN Elite One championship returned to the MTN Elite Two championship on Sunday following a 2-3 defeat to Avion
- Their relegation ends a ten-year stay in the top-flight championship, during which they won three trophies
- Avion Academy, Fovu of Baham and UMS of Loum are three of the five clubs to be relegated at the end of the season
USM of Loum have been relegated from the MTN Elite One championship exactly ten years after their promotion to the division.
The relegation of the Moungo Division outfit was confirmed on this Sunday at the Omnisport Annex stadium as they suffered a 2-3 defeat against the already relegated Avion Academy of Douala in a see-saw game in which they led twice and lost a penalty.
Jules Meyo hit the final nail on the UMS coffin with a 91st minute winner of the game Emery Tchoyi and Adamou Njoya also scored for Avion to reduce the impacts of UMS goals from Pauline Eloi Amayene and Godlove Lafon.
UMS, the two-time champions of Cameroon and 2015 winners of the Cup of Cameroon fell short of expectations this term, with Sunday’s match day 10 defeat highlighting a season to forget.
The game which failed to produce a goal in the opening 50 minutes ended up having four in the drama-packed last 40 minutes.
Amayene 51 put the 2016 and 2018 champions of Cameroon ahead in the 51st minute, benefiting from a perfect ball into the box to beat Maurice Nkoulou.
Tchoyi leveled with a bullet header after 71 minutes but there was more to come in the dramatic contest.
Experienced midfielder Pierre Francis Bailang wrong footed Nkoulou from the spot but saw his effort come off the woodwork before Godlove Lafon made it 2-1 for the boys of coach Souleymanou Aboubakar. The forward was booked for taking off his shirt in the celebrations of his goal scored 10 minutes before full-time as he thought he had won it for captain Thierry Ngalle and co.
Adamou Njoya Njoya made it 2-2 deep into the end of regulation time before Meyo won it with with a borrowed time goal that sealed UMS’ ten years in the top-flight championship and their return to Elite 2.
Winners of the MTN Elite One championship in just their second season (2016), a year after winning the Cup of Cameroon plus champions of the 2018 season plus runners-up of the national challenge Cup in 2017.
UMS had ten memorable years in the big time, created some amazing memories for themselves and followers of the national championship.
They will join Fovu of Baham, Avion Academy and two other teams to be relegated per the results of the last match day of the championship next season.
