Mexican veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is on the verge of making football history after reports that he could start for the Mexico national football team at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup following an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Ángel Malagón.

Malagón has reportedly been ruled out with a serious injury, opening the door for the experienced Ochoa, who is now 40, to reclaim the starting role between the posts. If selected, Ochoa would be appearing at his sixth World Cup, a milestone achieved by only a handful of players in football history.

Should he feature at the tournament, Ochoa would join global icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the rare players to take part in six FIFA World Cups. What makes the moment even more special is that the 2026 tournament will be hosted partly in Mexico, giving Ochoa the opportunity to reach the historic landmark in front of his home fans.

Ochoa’s World Cup journey began at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, although he did not feature in a match. He later rose to prominence at the 2014 FIFA World Cup where his outstanding performance against host nation Brazil became one of the most iconic goalkeeping displays of the tournament. He also played key roles in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, producing several decisive saves for Mexico.

His consistent performances on football’s biggest stage have earned him the nickname “Mr World Cup,” a title given by fans and pundits who regard him as one of the tournament’s most dependable goalkeepers. Known for his lightning reflexes and ability to rise to big occasions, Ochoa has repeatedly delivered standout displays whenever Mexico has needed him most.

Nicknamed “Memo”, Ochoa has built a reputation as one of Mexico’s most reliable goalkeepers over the last two decades. If confirmed as Mexico’s starter in 2026, the veteran shot-stopper will not only reinforce his legendary status in Mexican football but could also become one of the oldest starting goalkeepers in World Cup history, adding yet another remarkable chapter to an already extraordinary career.
