Georges-Kévin Nkoudou, the Cameroon international footballer, recently opened up about Cameroon’s struggles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in a podcast called “Club des 5” on YouTube.

The forward explained that the team faced difficulties with the previous technical staff in finding a suitable game plan

Nkoudou stated, “We had difficulty with the old staff to find a game that suited us […] During the CAN we were always in the reaction.”

He further added that the team lacked preparation and reference points going into the matches, which he attributed to either a lack of experience or knowledge on the staff’s part

“During the preparation, there wasn’t much and that’s the regret. So you arrive at the match and you haven’t prepared anything so you have no reference points […] I don’t know if it was due to a lack of experience or a lack of knowledge”.

Following Cameroon’s elimination by Nigeria in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16—a match widely regarded as one of the team’s worst performances—many players have refrained from commenting. Despite finishing third in the previous edition, Cameroon secured only one victory in Côte d’Ivoire, defeating The Gambia.

While some attribute the team’s failures to technical staff shortcomings, others point to interference from Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o. Nkoudou confirmed the FA president conducted a training session with the team.An unusual role for an FA president.

” I like him a lot because in terms of football, he gave me a lot of advice (…) Yes, the president did a training session. He wanted to help us, give us an idea of the game, in short he wanted to share his experience (…) Sometimes, he makes remarks to me but I answer, it’s true that he sometimes gets pissed off but hey he’s a big brother. However, he always has good advice (…) What I find unfortunate is that he was a player so he knows what it’s like when someone enters the locker room too much”

Samuel Eto’o’s unwavering love for Cameroon and football remains unquestioned. However, his active participation and presence in the football arena have faced significant scrutiny from both the media and the public. Many argue that his involvement places undue pressure on the players.

He further adds
“He can give advice but not be too much in the locker room. So that’s something he has to erase. On the other hand, at the CAN, he was there more for advice because he didn’t enter the locker room too much. He loves his country too much and he wants to do so well for the Lions that he acts out of love”

With the arrival of a new technical staff, many speculate Samuel Eto’o’s frequent visits are expected to decrease.

Nkoudou also recounted his initial World Cup experience, expressing hopes for more appearances in this global football event.

Unfortunately, the player hasn’t had an opportunity under Marc Brys, having missed out on the two World Cup qualifiers played in June. However, many anticipate his involvement during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
