For 27-year-old Jerome Ngom Mbekeli, the 2025 Chinese Super League season ended in heartbreak — yet it also highlighted his class on a struggling Meizhou Hakka side. The Cameroonian winger scored five goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances, proving himself one of the team’s few bright sparks, even as relegation loomed.

The final day of the season offered a last chance for survival. Meizhou Hakka travelled to face Beijing Guoan, whose squad featured fellow Cameroonian Michael Ngadeu, knowing only a win could keep their top-flight dreams alive. But Hakka were undone in spectacular fashion, suffering a 5–1 defeat, with Ngom Mbekeli contributing an assist — a moment of brilliance in an otherwise dismal display.

It was a cruel end for a side that had battled all season, collecting points inconsistently and often conceding at the worst possible moments. The defeat confirmed Hakka’s drop to China League One, while rivals secured results that sealed the club’s fate.

Despite the team’s struggles, Ngom Mbekeli’s influence was undeniable. Across the campaign, he directly contributed to nine goals, carrying the attacking threat in a squad that frequently struggled to create chances. His pace, vision, and ability to link play offered glimpses of what the club could have achieved with a more solid defensive foundation.

Relegation brings uncertainty, but it also presents a choice. Ngom Mbekeli could stay with Hakka and attempt to guide them back to the top flight, or he could explore new opportunities in the Chinese Super League or abroad. Either way, the winger’s 2025 season was a testament to his talent, resilience, and ability to shine even when circumstances turn against him.

For Meizhou Hakka, the task is clear: rebuild, regroup, and prepare for a challenging second-tier campaign. For Ngom Mbekeli, one thing is certain — his performances have ensured that the spotlight will continue to follow him, wherever his next move takes him.

At international level, Ngom became a national hero when his inch perfect cross helped Vincent Aboubakar score the lone goal to beat Brazil 1-0 during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Unfortunately he has not been called up to the national team since after that game.
