All is now set for the commencement of the long-awaited Nasarawa State Governor’s Football Cup.

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Amb. Lucky Isaac Yargwa, made the disclosure in his office in Lafia on Tuesday.

Yargwa said, “I am glad to inform you that the long-awaited Governor’s Football Cup is finally holding in April this year.

“Our sports-loving Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has graciously approved funds for the tournament to hold.

“The Governor’s Football Cup was introduced by the first civilian Governor of the State and current National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, His Excellency, Abdullahi Adamu, and was last held during his second tenure in 2005.

“Participants are drawn from the thirteen Local Councils and eighteen Development Areas of the State.

“The initiative is aimed at scouting for raw and hidden talents that abound in the State for further development into global stardom.

“It’s also to promote peaceful co-existence among the diverse ethnic, religious and social settings in the State.

“Numerous talents, some of whom are now retired, were discovered from the competition.

“This, we hope, will help us to find our missing link in the round leather game and provide a fulcrum for, not only talent discovery, but job creation and revenue generation.

“With the approval, we are going to constitute some powerful committees made up of critical stakeholders immediately after the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections to ensure a successful tournament.

“Prizes and other reward packages are available for teams that make it to the final stage of the tournament.

“All things being equal, this competition will commence between the first or second week of April, this year.”
