Morocco up to 13th and Cameroon gains two spots in FIFA rankings as Burkina Faso plummet, Nigeria drops

Cameroon’s 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier success against Burundi has taken the Indomitable Lions to the 41st place in FIFA’s world rankings.

Rigobert Song’s side have moved two places up after beating Burundi 3-0 earlier this month to qualify for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Côte d’Ivoire – the 24th time the five-time champions have qualified for the tournament.

The latest rankings published this Thursday, September 21 leaves Walid Regragui’s Morocco above the rest on the continent, after they defeated Liberia 2-0 in their last AFCON 2023 qualifier game. The Atlas Lions keep the top spot.

On the global scale, Morocco has climbed to 13th, deservingly retaining their spot as Africa’s highest ranked national team, while Nigeria dropped to 40th spot in the global rankings, despite their huge win against Sao Tome and Principe earlier this month.

In the same vain, Cameroon that occupies the seventh spot on the continent and third-place Tunisia are Africa’s highest climbers in top ten. Both nations have gained two spots in the latest rankings.

Burkina Faso have paid the price for their poor showings, dropping by three spots, to the 58th position in the world and tenth best national team on the continent.

Current African champions, the Teranga Lions remain second on the continent despite losing two spots globally as a prize for the 1-1 draw against Rwanda and losing 0-1 to Algeria in a friendly.

Algeria and Egypt have lost one spot each– the two sharing fourth and fifth positions on the continent respectively are 34th and 35th in the global scale.

1976 African champions Morocco, Tunisia that won the AFCON on home soil in 2004, Cameroon who pulled a miracle to land their fifth crown in 2017, Mali and two-time African champions – Côte D’Ivoire are the five African national teams that have made progress this month while Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and Burkina Faso are the continent’s top ten that have regressed.

The latest rankings of all the African nations will affect their cedings in the 2023 AFCON draw to be conducted on October 12 in Abidjan.
