- Ministry Insist on respect of procedures
- Article 36 Bone of Contention
- Uncertainty Looms
Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (MINSEP), Prof Narcisse Mouele Kombi has made its position clear regarding recent modifications to the statutes of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
In a firm statement, the Ministry emphasized that any changes to FECAFOOT’s statutes must align with existing legislation and can only take effect after validation by the Ministry, in accordance with regulatory provisions.
At the heart of the controversy is Article 36, which proposes extending the presidential term limit from two to three terms. This change could allow Samuel Eto’o, the current FECAFOOT president, to remain in office for a total of 12 years. The adjustment, along with revisions to Articles 19, 23, 25, 39, 45, 49, and 56, was adopted during an Extraordinary General Assembly held on November 16, 2024.
MINSEP has formally requested detailed justifications for these modifications, raising questions about their compliance with legal frameworks and their practical implications for the governance and functionality of FECAFOOT. By asserting its regulatory authority, the Ministry has reinforced its role as a watchdog, ensuring that all sports federations operate within the confines of the law.
The outcome of this, could set a significant precedent for how sports administration is managed in the country, ensuring greater accountability and adherence to established laws.
