Bryan Mbeumo’s late heroics sealed a dramatic 4-3 victory for Brentford over Ipswich Town in match day nine of the English top flight.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Ipswich initially taking a commanding 2-0 lead through goals from Sam Szmodics and George Hirst.

However, Brentford responded just before halftime, with Yoane Wissa scoring and then forcing an own goal from Harry Clarke to level the match.

Mbeumo showcased his finishing prowess by converting a penalty early in the second half, putting Brentford ahead 3-2 after Clarke received a second yellow card. Despite being down to ten men, Ipswich fought back, with Liam Delap equalizing in the 86th minute.

Just when it seemed the points would be shared, Mbeumo struck again in stoppage time, his cross-shot evading everyone and nestling into the net.

This brace marked Mbeumo’s second of the season, following his double against Southampton, and he has now scored eight goals in his last nine Premier League appearances. With three international goals for cameroon and eight premier league goals this season, he stands as the second-highest scorer in the league, trailing only Erling Haaland.

This match marked Brentford’s first win after trailing by two goals in Premier League history, while Ipswich remained winless this season. Mbeumo’s performance was particularly notable, as he scored in his fifth consecutive home league match, a feat not achieved since his own previous run in 2019-2020.

Despite his impressive form, Mbeumo has often been overlooked, notably missing from the preliminary list for the CAF Best Player award. This award recognizes contributions at both club and international levels.

Last year, Mbeumo’s season was hampered by injury, and Cameroon’s early exit from the Africa cup of nations round of 16 likely contributed to his absence from this year’s shortlist.

Many analysts have dubbed him one of the most underrated African players in football today.
