- 2022 Cameroon Ballon d’Or winner, Maroua Souaibou has left South African club Orlando Pirates after a season and a half
- Despite high expectations, his time with the DSTv Premiership side was challenging, with minimal game time and no goals scored
- Souaibou was once considered the future of Cameroon football thanks to his 21 goals scored across competitions in 2022
Marou Souaibou, the 2022 Cameroon Ballon d’Or winner, has parted ways with South African top-tier club Orlando Pirates after a season and a half. The former Cotonsports striker, initially expected to remain with the club until 2025, mutually agreed to his departure.
Unfortunately, Souaibou’s time with the DSTv Premiership side has been far from ideal. Over the past two seasons, the forward made seven starts but failed to find the back of the net.
In the 2022-2023 season, he featured in five appearances, starting just one game for the Pirates. The subsequent 2023-2024 season saw the 23-year-old accumulate a mere 29 minutes of playtime across two appearances.
Before his move to South Africa, Souaibou represented Cameroon in the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar. His impressive performance, which earned him the Ballon d’Or, had been the catalyst for his inclusion in the senior national team.
As he departs Orlando Pirates, speculation surrounds his next destination. Many believe that his exit should have occurred much earlier. The talented striker’s future remains uncertain, but his journey continues.
