Indomitable Lions head coach has handed a first call up to 19-year-old French born midfielder Mathis Amougou for this month’s FIFA World Cup qualifier matches against Mauritius Island and Angola.
The Chelsea midfielder currently on loan RC Strasbourg who recently procured a Cameroonian passport has been drafted into the squad to compete with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Zambo Anguissa, Arthur Avom amongst others.
Amougou who came through the youth ranks of Saint Etienne is expected to bring fresh energy to the Cameroon squad when they face Mauritius Island on October 8 and Angola five days later.
Though Amougou hasn’t had enough game time in the past 12 months, his introduction to the Indomitable Lions fraternity is a welcomed development as he may go on to become one of the most important pieces for the squad managed by Marc Brys.
Here’s what we know about Amougou
Contract status
Amougou only joined Saint-Ettiene this summer and is contracted until the end of next season. Although only 19, he is highly-touted and has started nine league games this season. If the deal does go through, he would not be expected to go straight into the Chelsea first team given his lack of senior football and age.
The Blues expect that if a deal goes through, he is expected to immediately be sent on loan to Strasbourg to continue his development in Ligue 1.
Style of play
Amougou is a versatile midfielder. He is an athletic player known for making progressive runs with the ball, his speed, and being strong in duels. Despite his strengths, he needs to get more goal contributions to become a top player, however.
Did you know?
The Frenchman was voted the third best player of the U17 World Cup in 2023. He played seven games, scored twice and won 60% of his ground duels. He is a true all-action midfielder.
A product of Paris’ deep talent pool
Still just 19, Amougou is, like so many young players to have emerged in Ligue 1 McDonald’s of late, a product of the Paris suburbs. Growing up in Le Blanc-Mensil — the same small town that produced Moussa Sissoko and Raphaël Guerreiro, he played at amateur level for Torcy, while also being a part of the region’s famous Clairefontaine academy. Even at a young age, moving through Clairefontaine and playing with the academy at Sainté, where he moved at the age of 15, Amougou’s humble approach was winning plaudits.
Jean-Luc Vannucchi, the former coach of France’s U-17, was consistently impressed with his midfield charge, saying, “He’s not a guy who really shows off, at least not with us. I know he’s integrated very well into the squad. He’s never late but never too early (laughs). He’s a good guy, very involved in training, respectful. There’s zero problems with Mathis.”
