Malawian women’s national team edged former winners, Zambia 2-1 to emerge as the champions of the 2023 COSAFA (Southern Africa) Women’s Championship.

The only team with a perfect record ahead of the final scored the opener in the 34th minute after a defensive miss up allowed Asimenye Simwaka the chance to score inside the box.

Malawi thought they had doubled the lead before the end of the first half but Sabinah Thom’s goal was ruled out for a foul by the Video Assistant Referee.

Agnes’s Phiri equalised for the Copper Queens in the 84th minute from the penalty spot.

With the game approaching extra time, another defensive mistake ensured that Thom scored the winning goal in the additional minutes of the second half.

The win complete a perfect feat for Malawi as the team won all their five games.

They scored 19 goals and conceded six on their way to winning the COSAFA Women’s title in South Africa.

Zambia will prepare for their WAFCON 2024 Qualifiers while Malawi look for a bright future and hope to qualify for the 2026 WAFCON.
