Mario Marinica will leave the Malawi coaching job as the country’s football federation has confirmed the gaffer’s three years contract will not be renewed as they are currently in search of a new head coach.

“By Mutual consent, it has been agreed with Mr. Mario Marinica not to enter into negotiations for the renewal of his contract when it expires on 30 April 2023.” A statement from the federation read.

According to them, Mario will be on annual leave until the date his contract expires.

The federation did not forget to appreciate his work done during the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The 58-year-old Romanian who took over as head coach of Malawi in November 2021, guided the team to the round of 16 of the 2021 AFCON.

Malawi succumbed to a 4#0 defeat to Egypt in last week’s 2023 AFCON qualifier clash, leaving them with very little chance of picking a ticket to the final phase of the competition in Ivory Coast next year.

The Flames must grab victories against Ethiopia and Guinea to decide their fate of participation in the competition next year as second from group D, which Egypt is leading.

Malawi currently sits third in their group with three points from one win in four games. A win against Guinea will see them swap positions as the latter currently occupies the second spot.
