The two teams went into the Group D contest played at Stadio Nacional Do Zimpeto in Maputo, Mozambique. gunning for a win at all cost.
Malawi wasted clear chances with Chawanangwa Kaonga’s effort producing the best in Ethiopia goalkeeper before defender Chembezi Denis saw his header going over the bar.
Ethiopia stepped up the tempo in the second half with some chances but could not find a way past Malawi keeper Brighton Munthali.
The result saw Malawi and Ethiopia lying third and fourth with four points each thereby gifting Guinea passage to the Afcon finals joining Egypt.
The Flames went into the game unbeaten in three previous AFCON meetings against the Ethiopians after having then won twice and drawn.
