  • Nantes beat 10-man Auxerre to register their first win of the season on Sunday in match day two of the French Ligue 1
  • The win was Jean Charles Castelletto’s first as skipper of FC Nantes
  • They have picked up a win and a draw in two outings so far in the League ahead of their trip to Montpelier next week

Jean Charles Castelletto skippered FC Nantes to their first French Ligue 1 victory of the 2024/25 season this Sunday at home to 10-man AJ Auxerre.

Nigerian forward Simon Moses and 17-year-old teenage forward Bahereba Guirassy were the scorers to ensure Antoine Kambore’s team pick their first three points in their second outing this season and bury the memories of the disappointing draw against Toulouse FC last weekend.

Castelletto led the Canneries out for the second game of the season and first at the Stade de la Beaujoire knowing only a win will be accepted by the home fans.

Moses, the Nigerian wing wizard returning from a long-term injury put the hosts ahead after 14 minutes of early domination.

That early goal settled Nantes nerves and set the tone for the rest of the game. Kombore’s men spent the best part of the opening segment in the Auxerre half of the pitch but near misses plus poor finishing denied them the second goal.

Auxerre’s hope of coming back into the contest were dampened upon resumption for the second segment when Ado Onaiwu was sent off after a dangerous tackle.

The numerical superiority plus the lead gave Nantes just the ideal scenario and Castelletto and co managed it while seeking the three points insurance goal.

Substitute Bahereba Guirassay replaced Pedro Chirivella with two minutes of regulation time on the clock and scored the second for Nantes in the sixth minute of additional time to seal the victory.

The goal from the 17-year-old was his first in two appearances for the club that groomed him through their youth ranks.

Nantes currently occupies the seventh spot on the log with four points from two games ahead of their next outing away to Enzo Tchato’s Montpellier that was humiliated by 0-6 in the weekend.
