Former Cotonsport and PWD of Bamenda forward, Leonel Ateba Christian Mbida has been unveiled as a Simba SC player for the coming season.

Ateba signed a deal to join Simba SC of Tanzanian from Algerian giants USM Alger earlier this week and was unveiled on Thursday after all parties completed necessary formalities.

The 25-year-old Cameroonian forward joins the multiple Tanzanian Premier League winners on a $200 000 (approximately 120 millions FCFA) deal agreed between Simba and his parent club, barely seven months after he moved from Douala of Douala to USM.

His amazing performance for Dynamo earned him the MTN Elite One player of the month award before a move to USM and in Algeria he kept the pace, attracting interest from the Tanzanians.

Ateba who made eight assists and scored thrice in 19 matches in the second half of last season in addition to seven goals for Dynamo will replace compatriot Willy Onana who has been linked with a move abroad throughout this summer.

Ateba, a full Cameroon international who was part of the Cameroon squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire will replace compatriot Willy Onana who has been released to accommodate the maximum number of foreign players at the club. Ateba will reunite with his former Cotonsport colleague and fellow international Che Malone Fondoh Junior who became a Simba defender last summer.

Ateba has been registered with the Simba SC CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round squad.

The native of Yaoundé began his career at YAFOOT FC before joining AS Etoa Meki owned by Jean II Makoun then. He later moved to Fortuna and lasted two seasons there before a switch to Cotonsport where he played alongside Che Malone for a season before moving to PWD of Bamenda and later to Dynamo of Douala.

Before joining USM from Dynamo, he had been linked with a move to Tanzania with both Simba and Yanga SC mentioned as interested parties back then.

In the international scene, Ateba has had call ups to Cameroon’s Intermediate and senior national teams. He was at the last AFCON tournament as team mate to Vincent Aboubakar, Andre Onana, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa amongst others.
