  • Tunisia became the second African team to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their 1-0 win against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo
  • The qualification is their third in a row and takes their qualification tally to seven

Tunisia’s Mohamed Ben Romdhane scored a 94th minute winner at the Estadio de Malabo to seal a 1-0 win and crucial three points that booked his country’s place at the 2026 World Cup.

It looked as though they would have to wait to seal their spot, but Ben Romdhane was presented with a simple tap-in deep into injury-time after a defensive error allowed Firas Chaouat to tee him up.

Tunisia had goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen to thank for a string of saves in the second half as he acrobatically denied Saul Coco, Emilio Nsue and Alejandro Masogo.

Monday’s win took Tunisia’s points tally to 22 points from eight games. Their points tally puts them 10 ahead of second-placed Namibia, who have three games left. The situation amounts to the qualification of Tunisia for the World Cup.

Tunisia will make their seventh appearance at the World Cup, which is to be staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11-July 19, and their third in a row.

Tunisia is the second African side to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after North African rivals Morocco made it through on Friday.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea’s hopes of a first ever World Cup qualification are over for the moment because they are not in contention to be amongst the four best-ranked second ranked teams in African qualifier will enter the continental play-offs.

The Nzalang Nacional are fourth in Group H, two points behind second-placed Namibia who have a game in hand on them.

However, the Equatoguinean federation had lodged an appeal against a decision FIFA to impose two forfeits against them for fielding an ‘ineligible’ Emilio Nsue earlier in the qualifying campaign.

Should they be successful, they would climb back to second on the log and be in contention for the continental playoffs.
