Didier Lamkel Ze says reports he has been excluded from the Wydad Casablanca first team owing to disciplinary issues are unfounded and malicious.
The 26-year-old Cameroonian made the revelation on Tuesday during a televised interview with the club’s media division just before training at the WAC complex in Casablanca.
Lamkel moved to Morocco in January on a mission to restore his reputation as another of Cameroon’s great forwards. Unfortunately, the past two weeks have been dominated by media reports that the former Royal Antwerp lethal finisher no longer trains with the WAC first team.
“I am here, I go through the club’s routine daily, like my club colleagues. I am working hard to regain full match fitness. Such stories about being away from the first team are untrue. If it was so, the Moroccan media will be the first to publish it as we are here together,” Lamkel said.
Lamkel is yet to hit the standards of last season at FC Metz, owing to fitness issues. The striker has played three games this campaign at Wydad, but believes once his shape is optimal minutes and goals will be guaranteed.
“Yes it’s true I am not playing as well as I want, but am working hard to ensure that I improve this situation. In the meantime I respect the coach’s decision and my colleagues, while anticipating the opportunity to play and help the club get results through scoring goals,” the ex-KV Kortrijk man added.
There’s much football to be played this season; Wydad are through to the quarter-final of the CAF Champions League, currently lead in the domestic championship and reached the last eight of the King’s cup after a 16th final penalty shoot out win against FAR, a game Lamkel took and scored one of the a penalties.
Treble chasing Wydad could get the best from the ex-EFBC striker during the business end of the season, when he gets back to his peak.
Lamkel was named in Cameroon’s provisional squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but didn’t make the cut for the tournament. His absence delayed the opportunity to add to the one cap he won for his country in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier game against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde Island in November 2019 in Yaounde.
Lamkel is one of the most promising talents that the EFBC has produced during it’s twenty years of existence but is still to hit the peak of his power at club level.
