- The Harambee Starlets will host Cameroon in a first official home game since October 2021
- Eliane Manbolambo scored the winner in the first-leg game last Friday
- Kenya is on a run of five consecutive defeats against Cameroon
- The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) have announced the offering of free entry to supporters
Beldine Odemba has urged Kenyans to fire up the Nyayo national stadium and show their support for the Harambee Starlets in Tuesday’s decisive 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) return-leg game against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon.
The Starlets go into the second-leg game against Jean Baptiste Bisseck’s side trailing 0-1, after an early header from Spain-based defender, Eliane Manbolambo settled matter between both sides last week in Douala.
Though eliminating Cameroon appears to be an uphill task, the former Kenya international also knows they have never had a better opportunity to achieve that, reason she has called on fans whose relationship with the team at times been lukewarm, to rev up the atmosphere.
Asked whether the crowd can play their part in keeping alive dreams of a second AWCON appearance she said: “If fans can attend the match tomorrow, it will be a tremendous boost for us as a team.”
“I would like our Kenyan fans to turn up in large numbers. Kenyans believe in us and when they fill the stadium, they will have played a very important role,” Odimba said.
The trainer who only took over the job in recent months has had huge support from the state. She however submitted a fresh request to the government as part of efforts to put Cameroon in difficulties.
Odemba added: “We hope they ask for permission from work to leave early because it’s a weekday game. If they are able to come it will be very important for us.”
“Starlets have been getting positive vibes from fans,” Odemba revealed.
Kenya have a poor return in meetings against Cameroon, but hopes to pull off a miracle at the Nyayo national stadium on Tuesday at 3PM Nairobi time.
Kenya, on a run of five consecutive defeats against Cameroon, needs to win by two goals to advance to the second round.
Visiting Cameroon needs to just avoid any defeat by two goals to stay alive in the journey to Morocco 2024.
The indomitable Lionesses traveled to Nairobi on Sunday morning while their host Harambee Starlets also got to town on the same day.
The fact that the game will be the last at Nyayo before a one-year closure for renovation makes it more attractive for locals expected to fill the 45000 capacity stadium.
The aggregate winner of the tie will face Botswana or Gabon. The former lead 4-1 ahead of the second-leg tie which will be played at home.
Morocco, who were hosts and runners-up of the previous AWCON will host the next tournament on a date to be announced by CAF.
