Jules Armand Kooh, Cameroon’s distinguished striker, credits his remarkable season in the Elite One championship to his relentless pursuit of personal growth and the collective efforts of his team.
During his guest appearance on STV’s esteemed sports program “La Presse Refait Le Match” on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the league’s leading scorer reflected on his five-year journey in Elite One, sharing insights into his personal and professional evolution.
“There’s no magic behind my success; it’s all about the growth in my experience and maturity. This season, I was blessed with favorable conditions. The unwavering support from my teammates and coaching staff, which I hadn’t fully experienced in the past, played a pivotal role in my outstanding performance,” Kooh remarked.
He noted a significant improvement in the league’s quality, from defense to attack, and praised the contributions of both seasoned and emerging players.
Kooh’s transformation this season has been remarkable, evolving from a promising player to a masterful goal-scorer, adept at finding the net with both precision and flair.
The Astre forward has been sensational, scoring 22 goals in 27 league appearances, a stark contrast to his previous maximum of five goals in a season.
Despite challenges such as unpaid salaries and player strikes, which affected the team’s morale and performance, Kooh’s consistent scoring helped Astre navigate through a tough season.
“The frustrations of the season, particularly when we conceded goals, taught me that defense is a team effort. The goals we let in reflected our collective performance,” he explained.
Satisfied with the regular season’s results, the former stade renard player expressed contentment with achieving his personal objectives and helping his team secure their spot in Elite One, along with earning the title of the league’s top scorer.
The 24-year-old spoke positively of his experiences with both coaches, Ernest Agbor and Gabriel Zabo, highlighting Coach Zabo’s understanding of his strengths and ability to create the ideal conditions for his success.
“My experience working under Coach Agbor was positive, and it only improved with the arrival of Coach Zabo. Having previously collaborated, he understands my strengths and placed me in optimal conditions to perform at my best” he explained
In the 10 matches he played in the relegation playoff, the former Avion Striker scored eight goals, including a hat-trick against Fovu of Baham and a crucial double against Avion, contributing significantly to Astre’s retention in the premier league.
Among his 22 goals, Jules cherishes his 40-yard strike against Apejes in the relegation playoff the most, naming it his best goal of the season.
Reflecting on a memorable 2-0 win against Dynamo of Douala during the second phase of the competition, Kooh identified it as a pivotal moment and a morale booster during a challenging time for the team.
“A standout moment for me was our match against Dynamo of Douala during the second phase of the competition, where we secured a 2-0 victory—our first win of that phase and a turning point during a challenging period for the team” He explained
Addressing the issue of past top scorers from Cameroon not making an impact internationally, the 24-year-old is determined to chart a different course by working hard to excel and proudly represent his league on a global stage.
The 2023-2024 football season in Cameroon has unfortunately not delivered on the anticipated advancements in player welfare. Despite assurances of enhanced conditions, players continue to face financial neglect, with numerous clubs failing to settle substantial salary arrears. Amidst these challenges, Armand joins other players alike, voicing his desire for meaningful change and respect for their professional rights.
With the league over, the striker’s next objective is to help Astre reach higher heights in the Cup of Cameroon.
