Captain of Ivorian champions, Joy Sunday says Athletico FC will bounce back from a 3-2 defeat to Delra Queens of Nigeria in the semi-final of 2023 West African Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League QuaLifiers at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
The host team of the third edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League are using the tournament as a preparation for the main tournament on home soil in November.
With qualification for the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League sealed, Athletico FC reached the semi-final of the 2023 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers but surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose 3-2 in the hands of Nigerian champions, Delta Queens on Monday.
“Actually we were disappointed because I see us winning the match but all hopes are not yet lost,” Joy Sunday who is the Nigerian captain of Athletico FC told journalists after the game.
“We are still coming back on Wednesday and try our best to play hard and go back to Ivory Coast.
“We wish the Nigerian team, Delta Queens the best of luck in their final match so that we will also meet again in Ivory Coast.”
The Ivorian champions will next face the champions of Benin Republic, Sam Nelly FC in the third-place match of the 2023 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.
Delta Queens will trade tackles with 2022 beaten finalist, Ampem Darkoa of Ghana in the final on Thursday.
For the third time in a row, the final of the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League final will see teams from Nigeria and Ghana face each other.
Hassacas Ladies FC of Ghana beat Rivers Angels of Nigeria to win the maiden edition in 2021 while Bayelsa Queens clinched the 2022 edition after a triumph over Ampem Darkoa of Ghana.
