Ita Mbong edge Cyclone 3-2 to qualify for the Guinness Super League

Ita Mbong of Nkambe have qualified for the 2024 Guinness Super League championship, following a 3-2 win against Littoral Women’s Football League champions, Cyclone of Douala.

Shey Blessing’s 77 minute penalty into the top right corner of the net turned out to be the winner in the game the Nkambe girls initially led by 2-0 before being pegged back.

An early brace from Ade Destiny put the Northwest champions ahead by 2-0 at the interval.

Cyclone rallied in the second segment and made it a more interesting contest all over.

Ernestine Djanga dispatched a penalty eight minutes upon the interval before completing her brace to make it 2-2 in a flash, completing the second brace of the contest.

Though Cyclone had a number of chances to lead, Glory Shey in goal for Ita Mbong denied them.

The breakthrough came in the 77th minute as Blessing benefited from a penalty after Referee Guimbang Aline picked a foul on Edith Bana in the box to point to the spot.

There were chances for both sides in the final moments of the game, but no goal for the fans that turned out at the Omnisport Annex stadium.

At the blast of the final whistle Ita Mbong became the newest member of the Guinness Super League championship.

The Northwest outfit will be a member of the fourth edition of the women’s flagship championship expected to begin in January 2024.
